Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir administration has not declared state mourning following the death of former Governor Satya Pal Malik, who passed away on August 5, in Delhi.
Malik, 79, died at 1:10 pm at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital after a prolonged illness, earlier confirmed his personal secretary KS Rana. He had been undergoing treatment for kidney-related complications and was on dialysis since his admission to the hospital on May 11. In a social media post on June 8, Malik had described his condition as “serious.”
Appointed in August 2018, Malik served as the 10th and last Governor of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, a tenure that saw the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A in August 2019. He remained in office until October 2019, when the state was divided and downgraded to a Union Territory, now governed by a Lieutenant Governor.
Originally from Baghpat in western Uttar Pradesh, Malik had a political career spanning five decades, beginning in the 1970s as an MLA elected on a Bharatiya Kranti Dal ticket. He was later nominated to the Rajya Sabha by Charan Singh’s Lok Dal in 1980 and joined the Congress in 1984, securing another Rajya Sabha term in 1986. Over the years, he was associated with several political parties.
