Over 5,000 evacuated from low-lying flooded areas in Jammu: LG Sinha

Over 5,000 evacuated from low-lying flooded areas in Jammu.

Jammu: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Wednesday reviewed the flood situation in Jammu division with Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar and other senior officials, directing immediate restoration of power, water supply and communication in areas where water levels are receding.

The LG said more than 5,000 people have been evacuated from low-lying areas to safer locations. He added that the Army, NDRF and SDRF are working in close coordination with the divisional administration to carry out rescue and relief operations.

“We are ensuring adequate supply of relief material and all possible assistance is being provided to the affected population,” Sinha said.

A cloudburst in Doda’s Bhalesa region (Charu Nallah) triggered flash floods on August 26, resulting in 3 casualties and extensive property damage. A devastating landslide near the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage route has claimed at least 30 lives. The yatra has been suspended, and key transportation arteries—including bridges and rail lines—have sustained extensive damage, with vehicles trapped and highways blocked.

Around 3,500 people have been evacuated. Heavy rainfall continues to batter the region, with the Sheshnag Nallah in Pahalgam exceeding its all-time high water level. The Jhelum river is rising sharply, prompting flood and landslide advisories across the valley.

The Jammu region recorded 368 mm of rainfall in a single day, severely impacting rivers like the Tawi, Chenab, Jhelum, and Basantar, which have flooded adjacent low-lying areas. Communication infrastructure has been critically disrupted—internet and mobile services are either down or functioning at severely limited capacity in many areas.
