Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir administration has said that today will remain a public holiday on account of Eid Milad-un-Nabi (SAW), as earlier notified. A senior official told KDC that there has been no change in the schedule and that all offices, educational institutions and government departments will remain closed in observance of the auspicious occasion.

Eid Milad-un-Nabi (SAW), marking the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), is being observed across Jammu and Kashmir with religious fervour and reverence.

However, the announcement has drawn sharp criticism from Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who accused the authorities of showing “utter disregard” towards the sentiments of the Muslim community. “For the second consecutive year, they have failed to reschedule the holiday in accordance with the actual date, which is tomorrow. This deliberate negligence is unacceptable to the Muslims of J&K who strongly protest it,” he said.

The Mirwaiz further added that the silence of the elected government on the issue was “equally regrettable” and that it reflected its failure to take a stand on matters concerning the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He said he would raise the matter in his Friday sermon at Jama Masjid later today.

Education minister Sakina Itoo, posted on X, “This is totally unjust that Eid-e-Milad, a sacred occasion for Muslims worldwide, is not observed as a holiday on the correct date in J&K. What does “subject to appearance of the moon” mean if it is not followed? Despite repeated requests from the elected Govt to shift the holiday, no action has been taken. This is playing with the emotions of the people. Such decisions should be at the helm of the elected government.”
