New Delhi: The BJP government of India has circulated among Lok Sabha members a bill proposing the repeal of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and its replacement with a new rural employment law titled the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin), PTI reported, quoting sources.
According to a copy of the proposed legislation, the Viksit Bharat–Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G) Bill, 2025, seeks to repeal the MGNREGA, enacted in 2005.
The bill aims to create a rural development framework aligned with the national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, it said.
It proposes a statutory guarantee of 125 days of wage employment in every financial year for each rural household whose adult members volunteer to undertake unskilled manual work. The proposed law also focusses on promoting empowerment, growth, convergence and saturation to build a prosperous and resilient rural India.
The news agency quoted sources further saying that the bill is likely to be introduced in the Lok Sabha during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament, which began on December 1 and will conclude on December 19.
