Israel claims killing of Iran security chief amid escalating war

Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council

Israel’s defence minister, Israel Katz, announced that Israeli forces have killed Iran’s senior security official, Ali Larijani, in a targeted strike.

Reports in Israeli media suggest Larijani was attacked along with his son while hiding in an apartment.

Katz stated that the operation was carried out under directives from himself and the prime minister, adding that efforts to eliminate Iran’s leadership would continue.

Larijani had appeared publicly just days earlier during Quds Day events and was known as a former nuclear negotiator and close associate of Ali Khamenei, who was reportedly killed earlier in the conflict. Iran has not yet confirmed Larijani’s death.

Meanwhile, tensions continue to rise across the region. Attacks involving drones and rockets targeted the US embassy in Baghdad, while the UAE briefly shut and later reopened its airspace due to threats.

British Airways has suspended some Middle East flights amid uncertainty. Iran has launched new strikes against Israel and claims to have seized hundreds of Starlink devices.

Donald Trump has urged global allies, particularly NATO members, to help secure the Strait of Hormuz.
