Doda: The District Magistrate of Doda has imposed a ban on unauthorised assemblies under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) as MLA Mehraj Malik, along with hundreds of supporters, was heading towards the district headquarters. However, he reached the town and went ahead with his programme. He addressed thousands of workers who had gathered to attend the programme.
According to an order issued by District Magistrate Krishan Lal (JKAS), a copy of which is with news agency Kashmir Dot Com, the administration noted that some groups were planning demonstrations and mobilising crowds, raising concerns over public order and safety.
The order stated that gatherings were being planned at Clock Tower Chowk near the SSP office, the road leading to the Sports Stadium, the Stadium area up to Akramabad, and the stretch from Clock Tower to the old bus stand.
Invoking Section 163 of the BNSS, the District Magistrate banned unauthorized assemblies of five or more persons, as well as protests and dharnas in the notified areas.
The restrictions cover Clock Tower Chowk, Dessa Road up to Akramabad, the Sports Stadium and its 100-metre radius, and the stretch from Clock Tower to the old bus stand, except for events with prior permission.
The order said the Senior Superintendent of Police, Doda, would ensure strict implementation, warning that violators would face action under Section 223 of the BNSS, 2023.
As individual service of notice was not feasible, the order was issued ex parte and directed to be publicised through newspapers, the district website, and by affixing copies at key government offices.
The restrictions came into force on May 3, 2026, and will remain in effect for two months, as per the order.
The development comes amid heightened political activity in Doda following Malik’s release, with a large number of supporters reportedly accompanying him.
