Urges introspection on an unfolding social disorder
Srinagar: The Group of Concerned Citizens ( GCC) J&K has condemned the alleged murder of a woman in Srigufwara (Anantnag) today.
In a statement, the spokesperson said that citing reports of a woman allegedly burnt alive in horrifying circumstances, the GCC said that the gruesome incident is yet another shocker after the recent rape-and-murder of an innocent minor girl in Galwanpora( Budgam) that retained public focus for some time before fading into silence.
There is no official word either where the investigation, which ought to have been assigned to a Spl Investigation Team ( SIT) , is actually headed ?
“The issue before us is not only growing crime . It is as much our increasing indifference , as civil society , to an unfolding new social (dis)order. Acts of violence and crime of all hue –rape, murder, domestic violence , exploitation of women and children, alcohol addiction, drug abuse etc. do not materially change anything of our routine or business-as-usual.
Repeated exposure to injustice no longer moves us as it used to. Suffering of fellow human beings, even if in close neighbourhood , seldom evokes an effective intervention. We must ask ourselves whether our collective conscience has gone numb” ? a GCC statement issued here today said.
The Group has expressed the hope of a thorough and time-bound probe of Srigufwara incident by a highly professional team and that the pepetrators are handed condign punishment under law.
It has also urged an honest introspection by the public at large on the one end , and the clergy and community leaders on the other on ” our collective failure against crime and violence in general , and on women and children in particular “
