Srinagar: Activist Sonam Wangchuk has called the proposed July 20 march to Parliament “India’s second freedom movement”, urging people across the country to participate and make it a success.

In a handwritten message shared on social media by his wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, from Safdarjung Hospital, Wangchuk said the movement seeks “freedom from injustice” and “freedom from fear”.

The note read: “20th July. India’s second freedom movement. Freedom from injustice (like paper leaks). Freedom from fear (my illegal detention). March to the Parliament. Please make it a big success.” It was signed: “Sent through Gitanjali from my illegal detention at Safdarjung.”

Wangchuk has alleged that he is being kept at Safdarjung Hospital against his wishes after being removed from the Jantar Mantar protest site. Authorities have not publicly responded to his claim.

The Parliament march has been organised by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), which is demanding action over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, reforms to the examination system, and the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Wangchuk joined the CJP-led protest on June 28 and was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital after an extended hunger strike at Jantar Mantar. According to the organisers, he has continued his indefinite fast from the hospital and entered the 22nd day of his hunger strike on July 19.

His protest is focused on seeking the Education Minister’s resignation over alleged examination scandals, including the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak.
