President Donald Trump said the United States could win its war with Iran “very soon” but refused to rule out a return to US military strikes ahead of November elections.
Speaking to Fox News on Sunday on the sidelines of the PGA Tour Presidents Cup, Trump said ending the conflict would lead to a sharp drop in global oil prices. He said preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon continues to be the central US goal.
“I think what’s going to happen is we’re going to win this war very soon, and as soon as we win it, the oil will go down, way down to what it was before the war,” Trump said.
Asked if the US Strikes could resume before the midterms, Trump said. “I don’t want to say that. I don’t want to say that. I mean, it’s possible, but I just don’t want to say that.”
Trump also said the US had already made significant military gains against Iran and said economic pressure had severely hurt the Iranian economy.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran was ready for renewed fighting but would remain open to diplomacy.
“We care about our national interests. At the same time, we stand ready for diplomacy. It is up to President Trump to choose,” Araghchi told NBC News.
