Flood fury in Akhnoor: Families trapped as Chenab swells, rescue Op underway

15 people have been trapped in the floods in the Gadkhal area of Akhnoor for the past 10 hours.

Jammu: The flood situation in Akhnoor turned grim on Wednesday as the Chenab River continued to flow above the danger mark, leaving several families stranded and prompting round-the-clock rescue operations by the administration.

Officials told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that, around 15 people have been trapped in the floods in the Gadkhal area of Akhnoor for the past 10 hours. Rescue teams, supported by boats and other equipment, have been pressed into service to bring the stranded residents to safety. “The administration is making continuous efforts to rescue them,” officials said.

The Chenab River has risen dramatically following incessant rainfall in the region, crossing 49 feet on Tuesday night, nearly 14 feet above the danger mark.

This marks the second-highest water level recorded so far, surpassed only in September 1992 when the river touched 61 feet, sweeping away the historic Karan Steel Bridge and snapping the
Jammu–Akhnoor–Poonch road connectivity.

People along the riverbanks remain on high alert as authorities warn of more rainfall in the catchment areas. [KNT]
