Srinagar: J&K Police on Thursday said that two militants were killed in early morning operation in Baramulla’s Sopore area.

J&K police spokesperson told the FreePressKashmir, “In a quick operation, Police identified two militants, who were instrumental in throwing a grenade on our men in Sopore on Wednesday in which four cops were injured.”

“The operation jointly conducted with 22 Rashtriya Rifles, 92, 177 and 179 battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), two militants were killed in Mir Mohalla, Nathipora area of Bomai in Sopore,” the spokesperson added.

“The bodies of the slain militants were handed over to their kin.”

Superintendent of Police Sopore, yesterday, had told the FreePressKashmir that a grenade was hurled at a police party near the branch of J&K Bank in Sopore in which at least six cops were injured.

The slain militants belonged to Hizb ul Mujahideen outfit and were residents of Brath Kalan and Bomai villages of Sopore. One of them was identified as Aijaz Ahmad Mir.

Police said that arms and ammunition was recovered from the slain militants.

“The militants were hiding in a house in Mir Mohalla Nathipora when armed forces cordoned off the area soon after Sehri (pre-dawn meals time) today,” a youth from the area said.

“Soon, there was brief exchange of fire and we saw police carrying two dead bodies.”

A scribe based in Sopore said that funeral prayers of one of the two militants were held in Bomai. “Whole area has been sealed off to block the mass movement of people,” he added.

Reports of ‘minor’ stone-pelting incidents came in from Sopore town after the news of death of militants spread in the area.
