Srinagar: Authorities were imposed restrictions in some areas in this summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday after resistance leadership announced post prayer protests in the Valley against killings by the armed forces.
“Restrictions under Section 144 have been imposed to maintain law and order in areas falling under the jurisdiction of Khanyar, Nowhatta, MR Gunj, Safakadal and Maisuma police stations,” a senior police officer said.
Under the curbs, there can be no gathering of five or more people at any place.
The resistance leadership has called for protests after the Friday prayers against the killing of a civilian, Tawseef Ahmad Wani, 22, in Kakapora in Pulwama district in firing by the Indian armed forces on Thursday.
Police said Wani was killed when a mob attacked the Kakapora police post on Thursday after three Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants were killed in the area by the forces.
June 23 is the last Friday of the holy Muslim month of Ramzan. Large gatherings are expected in various mosques in the Kashmir Valley on Friday.
A senior police officer, identified as Deputy Superintendent of Police Muhammad Ayub Pandit, was killed a group of people outside the Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta area of Old City on Thursday night after he opened fire on them injuring three.
He was caught clicking pictures of people coming out of the grand Masjid.
Meanwhile, a complete shutdown is being observed in several areas of Pulwama district on Friday to mourn the death of three Lashkar-e-Toiba militants and a civilian who were killed at hands of forces yesterday.
The three militants were killed during a gunfight while as the civilian, Tawseef Ahmad Wani was fired upon during a protest in Kakapora area of Pulwama district.
All the shops and business establishments were closed in Pulwama, Kakapora, Awantipora, Tral and other adjacent areas.
