After removing beggars ahead of Ivanka Trump’s visit, Hyderabad now poisons dogs

Hyderabad: The preparation of hosting US President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump are so high that humans and animals both are bearing the brunt in Hyderabad. Last week, authorities in Hyderabad had picked up hundreds of beggars and street hawkers from the roads. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is now being accused of poisoning stray dogs.

After the Police declared begging as an offence and banned people from seeking alms for two months, in order to sanitise the city for Ivanka Trump’s visit, it has now turned to the stray dogs which seem to be “vanishing”.

Dog lovers say street dogs have gone missing from Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills and their surroundings.

Residents of these areas allege that street dogs have been caught and taken away by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in the past 24 hours. They allege that the dogs are being poisoned to sanitise the city for Ivanka Trump’s visit!

Animal activists allege that street dogs across Hyderabad are being poisoned or picked up by the municipality in a clean-up drive launched by the Telangana government in preparation for the Global Entrepreneurship Summit the city is hosting this month. Dogs have been found dead or seriously ill with symptoms of poisoning, they alleged.

A resident of Jubilee Hills who looks after strays in the locality said on condition of anonymity said that his dogs are very friendly and have never bitten anyone. “My dogs have not come back after being picked up.”

He said that doctors from GHMC confirmed, when the residents took some of the dogs for examination, that they had been poisoned.
