BJP rejects Ramzan ceasefire, says ‘it is against national interest, will wash away Army’s efforts’

The BJP has rejected the Ramzan ceasefire which was proposed in the All Party Meet on Wednesday, reported The Print.

The BJP has said that such a ceasefire would go against the ‘national interest and could wash away the Army’s efforts’ in the state.

“We are in complete disagreement and the chief minister cannot pressure us on this,” Jammu & Kashmir BJP spokesperson Sunil Sethi told ThePrint.

“It is not going to do any good. The Army’s operations to neutralise militants have been successful,” Sethi added.

The PDP said the BJP had not raised any objection at Wednesday’s meeting. “The BJP did not propose the ceasefire in the meeting but they didn’t oppose it either. Their view would be taken into consideration when the authorities initiate a ceasefire,” PDP spokesperson Rafi Ahmed Mir told ThePrint.

“As far as we are concerned, we think a ceasefire is a must at this time because we need to…give our people respite,” he added.

Meanwhile, National Conference working President Omar Abdullah, after the development has lashed out at Mehbooba Mufti for calling an All Party Meet when her own ally doesn’t agree with her.

On Wednesday,  Mehbooba after chairing the All Party Meet in Srinagar said that the Government of India should consider a ceasefire during the holy month of Ramzan.

Earlier, independent MLA Engineer Rashid, who was also present at the All Party Meet had demanded a ceasefire and an end to anti-militancy operations during Ramzan. He had also said that Mehbooba should resign if New Delhi doesn’t listen to her.

‘We will support her, ‘ he told reporters outside SKICC.

Works Minister and Government Spokesman Naeem Akhtar earlier in the day had said that  all the participants in the meet felt that a political outreach is needed in Kashmir.

Rashid, later in a statement, had proposed that all political parties should stay away from elections till Government of India doesn’t offer a dialogue which is acceptable to all stakeholders.
