Hartals are a compulsion, leadership is working on an alternative strategy, says Malik

Mohammad Yasin Malik, Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation front on Thursday said that Hartals (shutdowns) can’t achieve goals but they are a compulsion till an alternate strategy is formulated.

Addressing a seminar, ‘Responsibility of Leadership in Safeguarding the Sanctity of Martyrdom’ organized by the Hurriyat(M) at its Rajbagh headquarters, Malik said, “It is our compulsion, but the Joint Resistance Leadership is working to find an alternative strategy (to register protest),” he said.

Malik also called for all sections of the society to remain united to resist “all-out operations of New Delhi”. He claimed that Delhi has decided to force the people of Kashmir to surrender.

On Wednesday, the Government of India said that the armed forces will not launch operations during the holy month. However, the ministry of Home Affairs added that the forces reserve the ‘right to retaliate or if essential to protect the lives of innocent people.’

The Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti welcomed the ceasefire and thanked Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Prime Minister Modi for their personal intervention.

However Al Umar Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Toiba have rejected the Ramzan ceasefire initiative.
