A Delhi University official claimed on Monday that Congress-backed student wing, National Students Union of India National Secretary Akshay Kumar submitted fake documents to secure admission in the Department of Buddhist Studies, PTI reported. The official said the matter came to light after the department got the degrees of all students who enrolled for PhD courses verified in January.

The official said that Kumar allegedly submitted fake Master of Arts (English) marksheets. He added that an FIR had been registered at Maurice Nagar Police Station on March 16 by the Department of Buddhist Studies. The FIR stated Kumar submitted marksheets which showed that he enrolled for the PhD programme in March 2017, and submitted marksheets from the Manav Bharti University in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh. However, the varsity denied issuing them.

The official said the department will now take Kumar’s case to the Departmental Research Committee, which will forward it to the Board of Research Studies. “A due process is followed in such cases,” said the unidentified official. “The decisions are not taken in a haste.”

Saimon Farooqui, the media and communications manager of the NSUI, admitted than an FIR was registered in March, but said the university had failed to prove its allegations. “This is being raised to protect [Delhi University Students Union President and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad leader] Ankiv Baisoya,” he alleged.

Earlier, the NSUI alleged that Basoya submitted fake documents for gaining admission in the university, PTI reported.

The NSUI had released a letter from Thiruvalluvar University in response to a communication from the student’s body. It stated that the BA certificate submitted by Basoya from the university is fake.

ABVP replied by saying that after verification of documents, the admission had been allowed by the university.

ABVP won three out of four seats in the Delhi University Students’ Union polls, namely president, vice-president and joint secretary. Congress- backed National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) bagged the post of secretary.

The counting of votes had been paused for five hours after student organizations alleged ‘faulty EVMs’. It resumed later in the evening.

Expectations were on the fight being among  the ABVP, NSUI and the joint panel of the All India Students’ Association (AISA) and AAP’s Chattra Yuva Sangarsh Samiti (CYSS). However, the main competition simmered between NSUI and ABVP.

NDTV reported that the EVMs had not been issued by the Election Commission of India but rather ‘privately’.

“…I am directed to inform that the EVMs in question are not of Election Commission as no such EVMs have been allotted/issued to DU by this office,” Delhi chief electoral officer Manoj Kumar said in a statement late on Thursday. “It seems that the DU (Delhi University) has procured these machines privately,” he said.
