External Affairs Minister of India, Sushma Swaraj met with U.S President Donald Trump to send Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi’s greetings at a high level drug trafficking countering event at UN when he replied, “I love India, give my regards to my friend PM Modi,” Indian diplomatic sources stated to PTI.

Renowned journalist Bob Woodward in his new book titled, “Fear: Trump in the White House” had quoted Trump calling Modi as his friend who had told him that the U.S hadn’t gotten anything out of Afghanistan, PTI reported. The book has shown the Trump administration to be ‘dysfunctional’.

“Prime Minister Modi of India is a friend of mine, he (Trump) said. I like him very much,” Trump is quoted in the book. In reply, Trump stated, “The Woodward book is a scam. I don’t talk the way I am quoted. If I did I would not have been elected President. These quotes were made up. The author uses every trick in the book to demean and belittle. I wish the people could see the real facts – and our country is doing GREAT!”

At a Joint Fundraising Committee Reception in South Dakota, Trump said that India had called and expressed its desire for a trade deal, PTI reported.

“Frankly, I’ll tell you, India called us the other day. They said they would like to start doing a trade deal, first time,” Trump said. “They wouldn’t talk about it with previous administrations. They were very happy with the way it was.”

Trump had also earlier hosted Modi at the White House during his visit to the US in June last year. The White House said it was the “first dinner for a foreign dignitary at the White House under this (President Trump’s) administration” and that it was “seeking to roll out the red carpet”.

Modi had reciprocated warmly. “When he (President Trump) came to India in 2014… he was full of very warm remarks and observations about me, I still remember them,” he told reporters at the White House.

Swaraj had gone to attend the Global Call to Action on the World Drug Problem chaired by Trump as the high-level week of the 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly began in New York.
