Srinagar: Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Baseer Ahmad Khan on Sunday said that the rationing of petroleum products in the division has been ordered because of persistent closure of the Srinagar-Jammu highway and not for any other reason.

He appealed the general public not to heed to rumours suggesting shortages or depletion thereof adding that there is no truth to these at all.

He said continuous efforts are underway to fully restore the highway adding that the rationing order will be withdrawn as soon as the highway is fully restored.

He urged the general public not to panic and sought their cooperation.

After terming rumours on shortage of supplies in Kashmir baseless, the Divisional administration on Sunday made public the stocks available with them.

Stock availability status Kashmir:
LPG cylinders: 14,435
Motor Spirit: 164 KL
High Speed Diesel: 2,510KL
Superior Kerosine Oil: 936 KL

Earlier, Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik had said that rationing of petroleum products in the division has been ordered because of persistent closure of the Srinagar-Jammu highway and not for any other reason.

He had appealed for calm and said that additional deployment of forces was for the purpose of pre-election duty and asked the people ‘not to pay heed to rumours about curfews’.

However, earlier the government in a press release had said that ‘the supply situation of petroleum and other products in the Kashmir Valley is critically low’.

“The availability of petrol in the Kashmir Valley is adequate to meet the needs for just one day and that of diesel for four days. There is no stock of LPG in the Kashmir Valley,” the government had said.

“This is a result of the earlier blockage of the Highway for seven days and the ongoing blockage for the past four days, leading to disruption of supplies from Jammu to Srinagar. The government is taking measures to enhance the supplies to the Kashmir region,” the press release read as.
