Kuwait’s expat quota bill may force 8 Lakh Indians to leave the country

The National Assembly in Kuwait has approved a draft quota bill which significantly threatens the livelihoods of 8 Lakh Indians who will be forced to leave the country if the bill is eventually passed.

The National Assembly’s legal and legislative committee has declared the expat quota bill constitutional.

The bill proposes that Indians should not exceed 15 percent of the population in the country.

Presently, a total of 14.5 lakh Indian expats reside in the country, contributing to the largest expat community in the country. The draft bill could result in roughly 8,00,000 Indians leaving Kuwait, NDTV reported.

In addition to that, the bill proposes similar quotas for other nationalities.

It also calls for reducing the number of Egyptians who are known to form the second largest expatriate community totalling to roughly 10% of the total population of the Gulf country.

The bill is being seen to have been triggered by a drastic slump in oil prices and the economic crisis that the corona virus pandemic has triggered world-over.

Kuwait is a top source of remittances for India.

As per the economic times, in 2018, India received close to $4.8 billion from Kuwait as remittances.
