New Delhi: 82 Bangladeshi nationals were granted bail today by a Delhi High Court months after they were arrested for attending the Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Delhi.

The Bangladeshi nationals were arrested after allegations of violating visa norms and indulging in a missionary event in the wake of covid-19 without adhering to the guidelines provided by the government in the wake of the virus.

The accused have filed a plea under which they request a lesser punishment for violating the guidelines. Advocate Ashima Mandla and Mandakini Singh are appearing for the foreign nationals.

The hearing took place via video conferencing, as reported by NDTV.

The criminal Procedure of Code allows plea bargaining for cases where the maximum punishment is that of seven years where the offences don’t affect the socio-economic conditions of the society and when the offence is not committed against a child less than 14 years of age or against a woman.

Anger was whipped up in India against Muslims after media portrayal of the Tablighi Jamaat members as uncultured, and intentionally spreading Coronavirus.

Some news reports even accused the Jamaat of spreading, what they called, ‘Corona Jihad’.
