Srinagar: Troubled by receiving obscene calls on her mobile phone, Dr Rubaiya Sherif, daughter of former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, on Tuesday sought police help in punishing the erring callers.

According to a report by a Delhi based newspaper Times of India, the complaint has been lodged at Abiramapuram police station in Chennai.

The report said that calls, made from three numbers, had been troubling her since Monday and she had blocked the caller.

“Police registered a case under IPC sections 294 (B) (using obscene language) and 354 (d) (stalking). “We are trying to trace the caller,” the report quoted a police officer as saying.

Dr Rubaiya Sherif, 55, and her husband Shoukath Sherif, moved to Chennai a decade ago.

According to the report, in 2015, Shoukath had received a letter asking him to deliver Rs 5 lakh to a grocery shop in Royapuram, failing which he and his family members would be killed.

Police detained the grocer and released him after finding his handwriting didn’t match that in the letter.

On December 8, 1989, a few days after her father took over as first Muslim named Union home minister of India, Dr Rubaiya was kidnapped in Kashmir and the abduction made international headlines.
