India’s COVID tally crosses 70 lakh, 74,383 infections reported in 24 hours

New Delhi: The Government of India on Sunday said that country has crossed a “landmark milestone”, by witnessing 60 lakh recoveries from the novel coronavirus, which has affected more than 70 lakh people in the country.

In the last 24 hours, India reported 74,383 new infections taking its count to 70,53,806, the data released by the Health Ministry of India showed.

The country reported 918 deaths linked to the virus in a day, taking the total number of fatalities to 1,08,334. For the third day in a row, the active cases of COVID remained below nine lakh.

As per the data, Maharashtra and four southern states – Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu — reported the most number of cases.

“The five top states with maximum caseload (61% active cases) are also contributing more than half (54.3%) of the total recoveries,” the Health Ministry of India said in a tweet this morning.

Kerala added 11,755 cases, the most, in the last 24 hours, as per the Health Ministry. Maharashtra, the worst-affected state, reported 11,416 new cases, taking tally to 15,17,434. Over 40,000 people have died in the western state so far.

India’s COVID tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23 and 40 lakh on September 5. It went past 50 lakh on September 16 and crossed 60 lakh on September 28.

India remains the second-worst affected nation by the coronavirus pandemic, next only to the United States where the tally is about 76 lakh with more than 2 lakh deaths.

The number of infections confirmed globally has been reaching daily record highs for three days in a row, according to data from the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Globally, the are 10,64,838 deaths and the total number of confirmed cases is 36754395, the data released by WHO showed.
