India reports 70,421 COVID infections, 3,921 deaths in 24 hours

New Delhi: India reported 70,421 Coronavirus cases and 3,921 deaths in the last 24 hours, the country’s Health Ministry said.

The daily cases have been lowest since April as the country is seeing a decline in COVID infections. Delhi, Haryana and Tamil Nadu permitted more activities from Monday as the easing of restrictions by states gained momentum following a decline in active cases. Karnataka will also begin the unlock process, barring in 11 districts, from Monday, with the opening of parks and industrial units with riders, besides other relaxations.

After two consecutive weeks of decline in COVID deaths, India registered a 19 percent rise in the week ending on Sunday. However, the rise was mainly driven by the 12,573 backlog deaths added to the toll. The deaths in the seven days constituted half of 25,000 deaths recorded during the last seven days, making the week’s fatalities highest in the three weeks, Times of India reported.

Maharashtra has recorded the highest backlog of 8,622 deaths while Bihar accounted for 3,951 during June 7-13. Backlog deaths are fatalities from the past days that remained unreported due to delays by hospitals or other reasons.

Meanwhile, the Haryana government also extended the lockdown by another week till June 21, while easing several restrictions. Doing away with the odd-even formula, the state government allowed all shops to open from 9 am to 8 pm.

Goa on Sunday extended curfew till June 21 as the positivity rate in the state stood at 14 per cent, an official said. The curfew was first imposed on May 9 and has been extended several times since then, as the state witnessed its positivity rate reaching a high of 51 per cent before dipping gradually to the level now, he added.

Delhi will reopen from today as Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced the opening of restaurants with 50 per cent capacity, weekly markets, and religious places, saying the COVID situation has significantly come under control in the city. Salons, beauty parlors, and barbershops closed since the imposition of lockdown on April 19, will also reopen from Monday, officials said.
