Kashmiri Sikh activists pay tribute to farmers killed by BJP cavalcade in Lakhimpur

Srinagar: A group of Sikh activists staged a candlelight protest at Court road, Srinagar on Monday against the killing of four farmers and a journalist who were mowed down by the convoy of cars liked to the BJP.

The cars cavalcade was part of a rally of federal minister’s son Ashish Mishra in the Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh.

The protestors were holding placards that read “no farmer, no food”, “we stand with farmers”, “don’t bite the hand that feeds us” and “down with BJP/RSS”.

Angad Singh Khalsa, a Sikh activist said that they held the candlelight protest in solidarity with four farmers and one journalist who were killed by BJP cavalcade in Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh.

The farmers were moved down and killed in Lakimpur on Sunday while protesting against the farm laws, and the visit of Deputy Home Minister Ajay Kumar Mishra and Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya who are members of Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP).

Officials have confirmed that eight people were killed when the cars ran over them and several other were injured. The police have registered a case of murder and riot against the son of Union Minister Ajay Mishra Teni, Ashish Mishra and 13 others in connection with the violence.

Angad said that it is a deliberate attempt to suppress voices and spread terror among the farmers, and all those who are raising their voice against injustice by the ruling party BJP.

Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar is reported to have made remarks while speaking at a farmer’s event in Haryana that ‘encouraged the violence against farmers’ .

He had called upon 1,000 volunteers from different regions to pick up sticks and fight the farmers. In a statement he has said that “arresting a person will make him a leader after their release from the jail. If Mishra’s son will be arrested, he will be a leader after his return”.

Meanwhile, Khattar’s remarks have sparked anger among farmer groups along with Samyukta Kisan Morcha who have called for CM’S apology and resignation from his post.

While covering the protest a 28-year-old journalist Raman Kashyap was also among the eight killed.

The journalist was hit by a vehicle and was severely injured and later succumbed to his injuries in a district hospital.

On Monday, local journalists held a Dharna over his death and had demanded a compensation of Rs 50 lakh for the journalist’s family who worked with a private news channel.

The government had also announced a compensation of Rs 45 lakh to the families of four who were killed at the venue. The announcement came after a countrywide protest.
