United States President Joe Biden on Wednesday said that Russia’s Vladimir Putin will pay over the long run even if he makes gains on the battlefield in Ukraine.

Russia has begun targetting civilian areas in Kharkiv, Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, international media reported.

“While he may make gains on the battlefield – he will pay a continuing high price over the long run,” Biden said, according to Reuters, in his State of the Union address. Straying from the prepared text, Biden added “He has no idea what’s coming.”

Biden spoke to Congress on the sixth day of Russia’s invasion of its European neighbor and as Kyiv stared down a miles-long armored Russian column potentially preparing to take over the Ukrainian capital, and the US and a growing group of allies tighten sanctions.

Russian Army paratroopers landed in Kharkiv today. The Ukrainian Army said that there were clashes as soon as Russia’s airborne troops landed. Kharkiv, a largely Russian-speaking city near the Russian border, has a population of around 1.4 million.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which began last Thursday, has resulted in several sanctions, trade restrictions and financial penalties. Apple and Nike have both announced plans to halt product sales in Russia.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has asked Russia to stop bombing cities before ceasefire talks could start. The first round of negotiations, held earlier this week, yielded scant progress.
