In Hyderabad, approximately 50 people, most of them teenagers, suffered eye injuries during Diwali festivities in the city and its outskirts.
According to a report from IANS, the government-operated Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital received 50 patients, with 45 being discharged after treatment and five undergoing surgery for critical injuries.
The injured, mostly aged between 15 and 17, sought medical attention at the Mehdipatnam-based hospital, where some were hurt while setting off fireworks, while others were struck by nearby crackers.
Despite the Hyderabad Police’s ban on loud firecrackers in public areas, the celebrations continued beyond the permitted hours.
The ban, enforced by Hyderabad Police Commissioner Sandeep Shandiliya from November 12 to November 15, aimed to regulate the use of fireworks.
Additionally, tensions arose in Musheerabad as Hindu and Muslim communities clashed over objections to Hindus throwing crackers near Muslim homes. The dispute led to an altercation where Abdul Arafath, a 19-year-old student, faced verbal abuse, stone-pelting, and physical attacks from Hindu neighbours.
