Israel hiring Indian workers for construction; recruitment underway in Haryana

Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu with Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.

New Delhi: A 15-member Israeli team arrived in India on Monday to conduct recruitment drives, primarily focusing on hiring construction workers across various Indian states, Times of India reported.

This comes in the aftermath of the Israel genocide, which marked its 100th day on Monday, leading to the death of more than 24,000 Palestinians, and the revocation of work permits for a significant number of Palestinians.

Consequently, the Israeli construction industry is actively seeking workers from India and other countries to address the resulting vacancies.

The recruitment drive is currently underway in Haryana, scheduled from January 16 to 20.

More than 10,000 candidates have expressed interest in participating, particularly for roles such as bar bender, mason, tiler, and stuttering carpenter.

The offered monthly salary is Rs 1.37 lakh, inclusive of medical insurance, food, and accommodation. Additionally, candidates will receive a monthly bonus of Rs 16,515.

Following an agreement between the governments of Israel and India, an implementation protocol was signed on November 3, 2023. This protocol, facilitated by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India (GOI), and the Population, Immigration, and Border Authority (PIBA) of Israel, aims to streamline the employment of Indian workers in specific labor market sectors in Israel.

According to this protocol, upon arrival, workers will be provided with private medical insurance.

As outlined in a public announcement document released by PIBA in December 2023, the contractual terms, including the visa and work permit, are set for a minimum duration of one year, extendable to a maximum of 63 months.

A source has emphasized that PIBA ensures Indian workers will not be placed in areas near or within conflict zones.

In adherence to the agreement, the recruited workers will be subject to Israeli laws, regulations, and procedures.

A senior government official highlighted that all workers migrating from India to any international destination, including Israel, are eligible for insurance cover under the Pravasi Bhartiya Bima Yojana (PBBY).

This global insurance coverage is independent of employer and location, features online renewal facilities, and offers a straightforward process for certification of accidental death or permanent disability.
