Srinagar: National Conference (NC) leader Dr Sameer Kaul alleged that he was manhandled by traffic police officers on Tuesday, PTI reported. He later filed a complaint.
Kaul, a prominent cancer specialist, said the incident occurred on Boulevard Road while he was travelling from his Nishat residence towards the airport.
“It is really unfortunate what happened. I have never seen such abuse of power on the roads today,” Kaul remarked.
A police officer stated that the facts are being verified and more details will be provided later, the news agency reported.
According to Kaul, the traffic was stopped because the convoy of the Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor was passing through. Although directed to take an alternate route, Kaul was then turned back and told to take the original route.
When he complied, a group of traffic policemen, led by an inspector, allegedly attacked him without warning, verbally abused him, and physically assaulted him without listening to his explanation.
Kaul expressed his shock at being mistreated by the police, saying he sustained injuries and broke his glasses. He questioned whether such behaviour was sanctioned by the government and lamented the state of affairs in Kashmir.
“The physical pain doesn’t bother me as much as the humiliation,” Kaul said. “If this could happen to someone like me, what hope does the common man have? I suspect this might have been a targeted attack because of my affiliation with the NC.”
Kaul filed a police complaint at the Nishat police station and underwent a medical examination.
He urged the Lieutenant Governor to reconsider the cavalcade system, arguing that it holds the state’s people hostage.
