Masoud Pezeshkian, former Health Minister of Iran, won the 14th presidential election on Saturday by defeating his rival, Saeed Jalili, international media reported.

Pezeshkian received 16,384,402 of the total 30,573,931 votes in the runoff, according to Iran International News. However, voter turnout was relatively low at 49.8 percent, with over 50 percent of eligible voters boycotting the elections.

The presidential runoff voting began on Friday morning, featuring two main contenders: Masoud Pezeshkian and Saeed Jalili. Jalili is a principlist and the former chief negotiator in the nuclear talks between Tehran and world powers. The first phase of the election took place on June 28, and the following day, Iran’s Election Headquarters Spokesman Mohsen Eslami announced the results. In this phase, Pezeshkian garnered 42.6 percent of the votes, while Jalili received 38.8 percent. Despite Pezeshkian leading the race, neither candidate crossed the 50 percent mark required for an outright win.

Initially scheduled for 2025, Iran’s 14th presidential election was rescheduled due to the unexpected death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash on May 19.

Ebrahim Raisolsadati (14 December 1960 – 19 May 2024), better known as Ebrahim Raisi, was an Iranian politician who served as the eighth president of Iran from 2021 until his death in a helicopter crash in 2024.
