Bareilly: The Ittehad-e-Millat Council (IMC) planned a mass marriage event for men and women of other religions who had converted to Islam, but it was postponed after the district administration denied permission.
IMC chief Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan stated that the event would only occur with administrative approval. “We operate within legal boundaries,” he said. “We sought permission, which was not granted, so the program is postponed.”
IMC state in-charge Nadeem Qureshi confirmed that the city magistrate did not permit the conversion and marriage of couples, leading to the event’s postponement.
Initially, the IMC had intended to conduct marriages for converts from Hinduism to Islam, starting with five couples who would complete the conversion process and get married.
District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar stated that the IMC’s request for permission was denied, and the program was postponed. The administration received IMC’s notification about the postponement.
On Monday, Khan had announced that the mass marriage ceremony would be held on July 21 at Khalil Higher Secondary School, pending administrative approval.
The proposed event sparked controversy, with Hindu organisations protesting and demanding action against Khan. Protestors submitted memorandums to the district magistrate outlining their demands.
