Srinagar: The Election Commission of India (ECI), led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, arrived in Srinagar on Thursday to assess preparations for the long-overdue assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir.

The ECI team is meeting various stakeholders, including political party representatives and top officials from civil and police administration, at the Sher-I-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC).

Representatives from several political parties, including the National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party, Bharatiya Janata Party, and Bahujan Samaj Party, have gathered at SKICC to discuss election readiness with the commission.

Senior BJP leader Ranbir Singh Pathania emphasized the importance of free and fair elections, expressing hope for a high voter turnout.

The ECI’s two-day visit comes as the Supreme Court has set a deadline of September 30 for the polls to be held in the Union Territory.
