Srinagar: An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale shook Kashmir this morning at 11:26 am, according to the Meteorological Department in Srinagar.
The earthquake’s epicentre was located in Afghanistan. This marks the latest in a series of over a dozen tremors that have affected Kashmir in the past two weeks, with Baramulla district in north Kashmir experiencing the highest number of quakes.
Kashmir, situated in a highly sensitive seismic zone, is prone to frequent earthquakes. The region has a history of devastating earthquakes, with a particularly severe one on October 6, 2006, which caused significant loss of life and property, especially in Baramulla district.
