Imphal: The situation in Manipur remained tense on Wednesday following a clash between students and security forces during a march to Raj Bhavan the previous day, PTI reported quoting police officials.
Curfew, imposed in Imphal on Tuesday, continued into the morning as additional security forces were deployed and frequent patrols were conducted to prevent further incidents, a senior officer told the news agency.
On Tuesday, students clashed with armed forces while marching to Raj Bhavan to demand the removal of the state’s DGP and security advisor. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd after students allegedly threw stones in the Khwairamband and Kakwa Naorem Leikai areas of Imphal. Over 55 students were injured and taken to RIMS hospital, according to a student body.
Later that evening, the government issued an amended order limiting the suspension of internet services to five valley districts in response to the escalating student protests.
In a statement, the Raj Bhavan confirmed that student representatives met with Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and submitted a memorandum. The governor assured them he would act in the best interests of both the students and the people of Manipur.
Meanwhile, search operations in Kangpokpi district led to the recovery of arms and explosives, the police added.
