New Delhi: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday condemned the NDA government for its “failure” to prevent violence in Bihar’s Nawada district and its “indifference” towards Dalits.
His comments followed an incident where over 25 homes in a Dalit settlement were set ablaze by miscreants due to a property dispute.
Kharge, in a post on X, called the attack a “terror inflicted on the Mahadalit colony” and criticised the NDA government for what he described as “jungle raj.” He condemned the burning of around 100 Dalit houses, the firing of shots, and the theft of belongings from poor families.
He accused the BJP and JD-U of neglecting their duty to maintain law and order, claiming their disregard for Dalits and the marginalised has reached a peak. He also criticised Prime Minister Modi for staying silent and Nitish Kumar for prioritising power over addressing the issue.
Opposition parties similarly blamed the government for failing to curb rising crimes against marginalised communities.
Villagers reported that many homes were destroyed in the fire, and police have arrested 10 suspects, with efforts to apprehend more ongoing. Panic spread after the incident, leading many victims to seek refuge in nearby villages.
Sunil Kumar, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Nawada, confirmed the incident was related to a property dispute and assured that the situation was now under control.
