Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon on Monday killed more than 490 people, including over 90 women and children, AP reported quoting Lebanese authorities.
The strikes represent the deadliest barrage since the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war. As Israel expanded its air campaign against Hezbollah, the military warned residents in southern and eastern Lebanon to evacuate.
The Lebanese Health Ministry reported 492 deaths, including 35 children and 58 women, with 1,645 others wounded. Thousands of people fled southern Lebanon, creating a massive exodus toward Beirut, reminiscent of the 2006 conflict.
Israel’s military stated it would continue its operations until Hezbollah is pushed back from the border.
On Monday alone, Israeli warplanes targeted 1,600 Hezbollah positions, causing significant damage, although military officials did not specify a timeline for the operation. They also signalled a potential ground invasion if necessary.
Hezbollah, in retaliation, fired dozens of rockets toward Israel, contributing to rising tensions. Both sides have escalated their attacks in recent days, sparking fears of an all-out war. Meanwhile, the US and other international actors are working to de-escalate the situation through diplomatic channels.
Monday’s casualties surpassed those of the 2020 Beirut port explosion, further devastating a country already reeling from previous attacks and economic struggles.
