Ratan Tata, Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, one of India’s largest conglomerates, passed away at the age of 86.
Earlier this week, the industrialist had addressed rumors about his health on social media, clarifying that he was undergoing routine medical checkups due to his age.
N Chandrasekaran, the current Chairman of Tata Sons, announced Tata’s death in a late-night statement on Wednesday, praising his relentless dedication to excellence, integrity, and innovation.
He expressed deep sorrow, describing Tata as a mentor, guide, and friend whose leadership expanded the Tata Group globally while staying true to its values.
Chandrasekaran also highlighted Tata’s significant contributions to philanthropy, particularly in education and healthcare, which will have a lasting impact on future generations.
As the news spread, tributes poured in from across the business world and beyond. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Tata as a compassionate visionary whose leadership transcended the boardroom, while Rahul Gandhi lauded his lasting influence on both business and philanthropy.
Industry leaders also paid homage. Gautam Adani said Tata embodied India’s spirit with integrity and compassion, while Anand Mahindra reflected on the vital role Tata played in the country’s economic progress.
Mukesh Ambani called his passing a great loss for India and shared his personal grief over losing a dear friend. Other tributes included heartfelt messages from Kiran Mazumdar Shaw and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who credited Tata with mentoring modern Indian business leadership.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra government has declared a day of mourning in the state to pay tributes to industrialist Ratan Tata, the Chief Minister’s office said.
A statement quoting Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said the tricolour on government offices in Maharashtra will be flown at half-mast on October 10 as a sign of mourning.
Tata’s mortal remains will be kept at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in south Mumbai from 10am to 4pm and his last rites will be performed in Worli area of Mumbai later in the day. Home Minister of India Amit Shah will attend the last rites.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren also announced one-day mourning for the veteran industrialist’s death.
“A one-day state mourning has been declared following the demise of former chairman of Tata Group and Padma Vibhushan Shri Ratan Tata ji, who gave world recognition to a backward state of the country like Jharkhand,” Soren announced in a post on X.
