Pakistan accused Israel of undermining the “rule of law” at the international level through its military actions in Gaza.
During the Sixth Committee meeting at the UN, Pakistan’s envoy, Munir Akram, criticised Israel for violating international humanitarian laws and the rights of people under foreign occupation. He also pointed to the dismantling of arms control treaties, religious discrimination, and targeted killings as breaches of international norms.
Akram argued that it was ironic for countries complicit in the erosion of international law to advocate for its observance. He stressed the need for the clarification of the “rule of law” in global governance and called for greater adherence to international legal frameworks like the UN Charter and the Geneva Conventions.
The Pakistani envoy urged the committee to engage the International Law Commission in clarifying the concept of the “rule of law” and suggested seeking an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice, where Israel faces allegations of genocide for its actions in Gaza.
According to Akram, Israel’s military campaign has resulted in over 42,000 Palestinian deaths and left much of Gaza in ruins, with millions of civilians homeless and at risk of famine.
