Ghaziabad police arrested a 36-year-old man on Wednesday for allegedly harassing an Urdu teacher, Mohammad Alamgir, and forcing him to chant “Jai Shri Ram” before pushing him out of an elevator in a residential society, Indian Express reported.

The incident occurred at Panchsheel Wellington on Tuesday. Assistant Commissioner of Police Lipi Nagaich identified the suspect as Manoj Kumar, a resident of the society.

Kumar has been charged under multiple sections of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for wrongful restraint, intentional insult, and criminal intimidation.

Quoting Alamgir, Indian Express reported that when he saw Kumar on the ground floor around 5pm, the accused looked at him strangely and asked where he was going. After Alamgir mentioned he was going to teach Urdu, Kumar allegedly demanded he chant “Jai Shri Ram.”

When Alamgir did not respond, Kumar grew aggressive, forced him out of the elevator on the first floor, and called another resident to question Alamgir’s presence in the society.

Police are investigating the incident and exploring all angles to identify any other individuals involved. During interrogation, Kumar claimed he had doubts about Alamgir, stating that an inappropriate response from him escalated the situation.
