Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha addressed the Legislative Assembly in Srinagar on Monday, pledging efforts to restore the statehood and constitutional guarantees for J&K. The LG underscored his government’s commitment to honour the aspirations of the people, emphasising that these moves reflect a collective desire for a return to full democratic governance.
In his address, the LG highlighted several key areas of development, with connectivity among the top priorities. He announced that highway and rail projects would be expedited, including the long-awaited rail link to the valley and major highways in Jammu and Srinagar. Improved connectivity, he stated, would drive economic growth across the region, with enhanced access for even the most remote areas.
Employment generation was also a significant focus, with the LG announcing fast-track recruitment to fill government vacancies and vowing to implement recommendations from the Rangarajan Committee’s job creation plan. He pledged cooperation with the central government to support skill development and inclusive growth, aiming to address economic challenges in JK.
In tourism and industry, the LG laid out plans to develop new tourist destinations and industrial estates, aiming to attract investment and create local jobs. He also committed to improving tourism infrastructure, with projects like the Tawi Barrage expected to boost tourism potential in Jammu.
The healthcare sector is set for a substantial upgrade, with the LG outlining plans for better healthcare facilities in rural areas and critical care services across districts. He also promised expansion in medical education, new MBBS seats, and initiatives to address brain drain from the region, with a focus on building a sustainable healthcare system.
Addressing the drug abuse crisis, the LG announced a comprehensive strategy integrating law enforcement with community-based prevention, pledging a multi-pronged effort to create a drug-free future for JK.
Education reform was also a highlight, with a commitment to strengthening institutions, encouraging digital learning, and implementing the National Education Policy to create a more student-centered, innovative environment.
In agriculture, the LG committed to supporting sustainable practices, enhancing farmer welfare, and boosting self-reliance with initiatives under the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme, which targets increased output across various sectors.
For urban development, the LG promised better urban services, eco-friendly transport, and affordable housing, with plans to integrate online services through a single window portal for efficient delivery. The government will also focus on waste management and infrastructure upgrades for a sustainable urban future.
The preservation of water bodies remains a high priority, the LG said, with projects in place to conserve Dal and Nigeen lakes. He also outlined plans to create world-class sports infrastructure to channel the energy of the youth, aiming to showcase J&K’s talent on national and international stages.
The LG concluded by underscoring his government’s determination to build a prosperous and sustainable future for J&K, pledging that development across sectors would uplift the lives of its people.
