Srinagar: Majority of legislators from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were on Friday marshalled out after they tried to storm into the well of house to demand the roll back of resolution passed on special status in Jammu and Kashmir.
Amidst the speech by NC MLA, Javid Beg, the BJP MLAs stormed into the well amidst the sloganeering.
Almost 12 of the BJP MLAs were marshalled out of the house. The Speaker Abdur Rahim Rather told the marshalls not to allow them to enter in the house. Meanwhile, the remaining 11 BJP MLAs staged a walk out in a protest.
Friday marked the third day of protests led by BJP members against a resolution affirming the region’s special status. In response, the speaker ordered the ejection of 12 opposition MLAs, including Langate legislator Sheikh Khurshid.
As the session began, BJP MLAs chanted slogans like “Pakistani agenda nahi chalega” and eventually stormed the well of the House, prompting speaker Abdul Rahim Rather to have them removed by marshals. Following their eviction, 11 more BJP MLAs exited the House in protest.
The assembly had been in an uproar since Tuesday when Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary introduced a resolution stressing the significance of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and constitutional safeguards, which protect the identity, culture, and rights of the region’s people.
The resolution urged the government of India to engage in dialogue with the region’s elected representatives to restore these protections and develop constitutional frameworks to support them.
The assembly emphasised that any restoration process should uphold national unity while honouring the legitimate aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
