The UN voiced deep concern on Tuesday over the escalating hostilities in southern Lebanon, with Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, describing the situation as “appalling,” as reported by Anadolu.
Speaking at a news conference, Lacroix highlighted the challenges faced by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which continues to operate under extremely difficult conditions. Despite these challenges, UNIFIL has maintained its positions and continues various activities to sustain its presence.
Lacroix reported three incidents involving UNIFIL peacekeepers on Tuesday, including clashes, exchanges of fire, and airstrikes. He described the scale of destruction, displacement, and loss of life as devastating and called for an immediate end to hostilities. He also emphasised the need to uphold international humanitarian law to safeguard civilians.
During his visits to Israel and Lebanon, Lacroix reminded all parties of their responsibility to ensure the safety of peacekeepers, expressing concern over repeated attacks. He noted evidence, including videos, suggesting intentional targeting of peacekeepers in some cases.
Addressing reports of Israel’s use of white phosphorus and cluster munitions in Lebanon, Lacroix confirmed their use and reiterated that such weapons must not be deployed in areas where civilians could be affected. He renewed the UN’s call for adherence to international humanitarian law, lamenting that these appeals are not consistently respected.
