Srinagar: The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to address issues faced by tourism stakeholders in renewing registration certificates.
They expressed concerns about a recent tourism department notification (No. Reg/1129/581/DTR dated December 21, 2024), which adds complexity to the process by requiring multiple NOCs and clearances, causing delays and hardships for hoteliers, houseboat owners, and travel operators.
Despite an online renewal system, KCCI says the process remains difficult due to inter-departmental approvals. They proposed removing NOC requirements, citing streamlined systems like Income Tax and GST.
KCCI also pointed out that older hotels and guesthouses are unfairly held to new regulations, worsening the situation.
KCCI has called for the suspension of the notification and the creation of a simpler system in consultation with stakeholders.
They also stressed upon the need for stronger efforts to revive Kashmir’s tourism sector, which has seen declining arrivals since July 2024. The Chamber urged the government to promote Kashmir tourism through campaigns and marketing to boost the local economy reliant on hospitality.
