Jammu: Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo announced that the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Awantipora is expected to become functional by the end of November this year. He made this statement during a joint meeting with officials from AIIMS Awantipora, Health & Medical Education Department, PWD, Jal Shakti, and CPWD to review progress on the project and expedite its completion.

The meeting was attended by the Executive Director of AIIMS Awantipora, Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir, Secretaries of PWD and H&ME, Deputy Commissioner of Pulwama, Chief Engineer of CPWD, and DG Budget, among others.

Dulloo assessed the status of infrastructure development and the proposed timelines for completion. He directed the implementing agency to increase the workforce immediately after winter to expedite the work. He also reviewed the water supply scheme and the approach road leading to the institute, instructing the Jal Shakti Department to complete the first phase of the water supply scheme, including three bore wells, by May to ensure adequate water supply for the hospital’s operations.

The Chief Secretary also examined requirements for additional land and other resources to accommodate future expansions. He assured the Executive Director of administrative support to address any pending issues.

Dr. Sachidananda Mohanty, Executive Director of AIIMS Awantipora, provided an update on the progress, noting that approximately 61% of the work on the 57 blocks had been completed. He outlined the anticipated completion timelines for each block and highlighted challenges posed by the cold weather, which has reduced the labor force from 2,400–2,500 to around 850. Despite this, internal work is proceeding on-site.

The meeting was informed that construction is ongoing on six hospital blocks, four academic blocks, 16 residential blocks, 12 hostel blocks, an Ayush block, a night shelter, and a guest house, which are part of the AIIMS project. Once completed, this facility will serve as a premier medical college and hospital, significantly improving healthcare services in the region. (GNS)
