Srinagar: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti claimed on Saturday that she and her mother, party chief Mehbooba Mufti, were placed under house arrest.
Iltija stated that despite the recent assembly elections, the situation in Kashmir remains unchanged. She had planned to visit Kathua, while Mehbooba Mufti intended to go to Sopore to meet the grieving family of a truck driver who was killed in army firing on Wednesday.
Sharing images of their locked front gate on social media, Iltija wrote, “My mother and I both have been placed under house arrest. Our gates have been locked up because she was meant to visit Sopore, where Waseem Mir was shot dead by the army.”
“I intended to visit Kathua to meet Makhan Din’s family, and (I) am not being allowed to even move out,” she added in a post on X.
Iltija added, “Nothing has changed in Kashmir even after elections. Now, even comforting the families of victims is being criminalised.”
She also tagged Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in her post.
On Wednesday, a truck driver Waseem Majeed Mir was shot dead by the army after allegedly jumping a checkpoint at Sangrama in Baramulla district on Wednesday night.
Earlier, Iltija had raised concerns in a post on X, saying, “Shocking that after a civilian killing in Kathua dubbed as an ‘OGW’ another civilian from Sopore was shot dead by the Army. How strange that after chasing the truck for over 23 kms they claim to have fired at the tyres but somehow misfired at him instead.”
She further questioned, “Are Kashmiri lives so cheap? How long will you justify this unbridled impunity by pointing everyone with the needle of suspicion?”
Another civilian, Makhan Din, a 26-year-old resident of Batodi village in Kathua, was accused of being involved in militancy. He allegedly died by suicide on Wednesday night, reportedly due to police “harassment.”
Before taking his life, he recorded a video asserting his innocence and denying any links to militancy.
