Srinagar: Authorities in Srinagar have launched a dredging and cleaning drive to widen navigation channels and improve water circulation in Dal Lake. The initiative was mentioned in the ongoing Legislative Assembly session and the work includes multiple dredging projects across different sections of the lake.

Key efforts include dredging and widening a 700-meter stretch from House Boat New Baktoo to Anchari Mohalla, a 650-meter channel from Dole Demb to Kachri Mohalla, and a 1,200-meter link between Dole Demb and Kachri Mohalla.

Additional work covers a 930-meter stretch from House Boat Shamshad to the vegetable market, a 900-meter channel from the vegetable market to Kani Kach (Nishat Bund), and a 500-meter link behind Hotel Leeward. Outflow channels from Jaal Mohalla to Laam Mohalla, Lone Mohalla to Fogi Lanker Junction, and Nowpora Bridge to Dar Mohalla are also being deepened and widened.

Authorities are also dredging key outflow channels in Miskeen Bagh, Tang Bagh, Dalkawpora, and Baba Demb to prevent stagnation and improve water flow.

The Jammu and Kashmir Lake Conservation and Management Authority (JKLCMA) and the J&K Pollution Control Committee are monitoring Dal Lake’s water quality, classified as Category B. Currently, 36.37 million liters per day (MLD) of wastewater is treated through Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), with more projects planned.
