Media the biggest casualty in JK: Waheed Para sounds alarm in assembly

Jammu: PDP MLA Waheed Para raised concerns over press freedom in Jammu and Kashmir, calling media the biggest casualty in the region.

He criticised growing restrictions on journalists, frequent internet shutdowns, and what he described as systematic attempts to silence independent voices.

He argued that free and fair journalism is essential for democracy but is being stifled in Kashmir. Para urged the government to create an environment where the press could function without fear or pressure.

He also opposed the privatisation of electricity, warning that it would burden the common people and make essential services unaffordable.

He accused the government of favouring  outsiders under the Industrial Policy, claiming that 80% of the funds had been allocated to non-locals while Kashmiri entrepreneurs were sidelined.

He demanded transparency in the implementation of housing and land distribution schemes to ensure they genuinely benefit the deserving.

On the issue of Kashmiri Pandit rehabilitation, Para said that it should be treated as a humanitarian concern rather than a political one, calling for a fair and practical resolution.

He also pushed for JK Police to receive a hardship allowance at par with CRPF and BSF, citing their tough working conditions.

Additionally, he urged the government to regularise Special Police Officers (SPOs) and increase their salaries to ensure job security and fair compensation.

His demands sparked debate in the assembly, with the government defending its policies while Para insisted on immediate reforms.
