Nagpur: Amid the ongoing controversy over Aurangzeb in Maharashtra and the recent violence in Nagpur, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday stated that the film Chhaava, starring Vicky Kaushal, has presented historical facts to the public and it ignited anger in people for Aurangzed.
Addressing the Maharashtra assembly, Fadnavis described the violence in Nagpur—sparked by rumours that a right-wing group had burned a religious book—as a pre-planned incident. According to ANI, he alleged that specific houses and establishments were deliberately targeted, suggesting a conspiracy behind the riots.
The BJP leader also noted that the biopic of Chhatrapati Sambhaji had stirred strong emotions against Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, leading to widespread public anger. However, he urged people to maintain peace in the state.
Monday’s violence in Nagpur resulted in multiple injuries, including at least 15 police personnel, one of whom was in critical condition, according to Reuters. Vehicles were also damaged during the unrest. Police reported that members of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) had burned an effigy of Aurangzeb and his tomb while chanting slogans for its removal from Aurangabad.
In response, Fadnavis condemned the violence and directed the police commissioner to take strict measures to restore order. Authorities imposed an indefinite curfew in several parts of the city, including areas under Kotwali, Ganeshpeth, Lakadganj, Pachpaoli, Shantinagar, Sakkardara, Nandanvan, Imamwada, Yashodhara Nagar, and Kapil Nagar police stations. The curfew will remain in effect until further notice.
