Srinagar: Authorities have conveyed to the Auqaf that Srinagar’s historic Jama Masjid will remain closed on the revered night of Lailat-ul-Qadr, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said on Thursday.

Devotees will not be allowed to offer shab prayers at the grand mosque, a decision that has been met with strong condemnation.

Lailat-ul-Qadr, considered one of the holiest nights in Islam, is observed with night-long supplications and prayers by Muslims worldwide. For generations, thousands have gathered at Jama Masjid on this blessed occasion to seek divine mercy and forgiveness.

Terming the decision as “extremely regrettable and condemnable,” the Auqaf and local religious figures have expressed deep sorrow over the disruption of this long-standing spiritual tradition.

The move, they say, not only deprives worshippers of a place for prayer but also reflects the insensitivity of those in power toward the religious sentiments of the people.
