Teacher arrested for demanding ‘sexual favours’ from minor student in Bhaderwah, says police

Srinagar: A school teacher from Government Higher Secondary School Bhaderwah in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district has been arrested for allegedly seeking sexual favours from a minor student under threat of academic retaliation, Daily Excelsior reported.

The report quoting police officials mentioned that accused allegedly threatened to fail the student in her internal examination if she did not comply and offered admission assistance in a Punjab-based medical college in exchange for sexual favours. According to the report, the teacher claimed he had previously facilitated such arrangements for other girls as well.

The matter came to light after the student lodged a complaint on April 16. Following preliminary investigation, the teacher was taken into custody and a formal case was registered at the Bhaderwah police station.

The accused has been charged under Sections 74 (assault or criminal force with intent to outrage a woman’s modesty), 75 (sexual harassment), and 78 (stalking) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
