Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff, died Monday at the age of 88. The announcement was made by Cardinal Kevin Ferrell from the chapel of Domus Santa Marta, Francis’ residence, AFP reported.

“At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father,” he was quoted as saying.

Francis had been hospitalised at Gemelli Hospital on February 14, 2025, with a respiratory crisis that developed into double pneumonia. He spent 38 days in care—his longest hospitalisation during his 12-year papacy.

He made his final public appearance on Easter Sunday, “blessing crowds” in St. Peter’s Square.

Elected in 2013, the Argentine-born Jorge Mario Bergoglio emphasised humility, social justice, and outreach to marginalised communities. His progressive stance on issues like climate change, capitalism, and LGBTQ+ inclusion drew both praise and criticism.

Francis also led the Catholic Church through the COVID-19 pandemic and faced renewed scrutiny over clergy abuse scandals, notably his handling of a major case in Chile.

He is remembered as a reformer who sought to modernise the Church while directing its many internal divisions.
